• Major improvements in radiation oncology, radiation physics, radiation biology and technology have contributed to increase the cure rates and also the quality of life of the patients and to establish our specialty at the forefront of modern multimodal oncology. Recently, radiation oncology has been very successful in exploring new horizons, focusing on the development of innovative high precision technologies for imaging cancer patients during the course of their treatment and improving permanently the precision in treatment delivery. Lately we have succeeded in exploring how these advances will change clinical oncology. New areas of research will continue to shape our future, including the identification of new molecular pathways involved in radiation response, molecularly targeted radiation oncology and the coming revolution of oncology imaging. Furthermore, proton and ion beam therapy are becoming more widely available and will certainly have an impact on the future of radiation oncology.
